Implementation of the “Ticket on Card” System
Client
The client is one of the leaders in Poland in implementing, managing, and developing passenger transport fee collection systems. Their activities focus on the urban transport services market.
Project goal
The primary goal of the project was to create a simple, cashless, decentralized, and easily configurable payment solution. This system allows a ticketing operator to sell public transport tickets in various cities using payment cards.
Product
The payment solution is based on a tokenization process performed by an algorithm utilizing appropriate cryptographic keys. This tokenization algorithm is used in transactional processes as well as during ticket inspections. The solution, which avoids storing sensitive cardholder data, meets PCI DSS requirements for “Cardholder Data” protection. The tokenization process ensures the uniqueness of identifiers. Tokens generated by terminals for validators are sufficiently secure for transport systems and prevent any intervention or reading of the payment card’s PAN number. The implementation of the solution, which turns the payment card into a ticket identifier, is particularly feasible in “contactless only” devices and some projects where tickets are purchased in vehicles through machines equipped with “chip & pin” terminals.

Implementation
The product was implemented and launched in production mode several years ago. It is currently operational in small and medium-sized cities in Poland (with several hundred validators installed on passenger transport vehicles). The system is continuously maintained and developed according to the client’s expectations.
